Adult Literacy

The ROE Adult Literacy program has been in existence since 1983, serving the needs of our community.

We are an affiliate of ProLiteracy America, and we provide direct one-on-one tutoring service within Peoria, Marshall and Woodford Counties by recruiting, training and matching volunteer tutors with adults in need of basic reading skills and English as a Second Language.

Since our inception nearly 40 years ago, we have:

  • helped hundreds of adults improve their reading skills and learn to read and speak English.

  • trained over 400 tutors over the years, many of which remain with our program today.

We Need Volunteer Tutors!

We coach volunteer tutors and match them with adult learners almost immediately. We offer training workshops, normally at local libraries. Tutoring is normally set up by the tutor and the individual learner to meet their individual schedules and is held at a public place such as a library, church or even a school.

Tutors normally meet one hour per week with their adult learner teaching the skills necessary to become a fluent reader.

Questions?

If you have questions regarding becoming a volunteer tutor, if you are interested in finding out more about our program, or know someone who could use our tutoring services, please contact our Director at 309-472-2468 or email John Meisinger at jmeisinger@peoriaroe.org.

The Adult Literacy Program is made possible by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a division of the Office of Secretary of State, using funds designated for literacy. ProLiteracy materials are used to support adults at every stage of their literacy journey.
