ROE Adult Literacy (formerly UPWARD) has been in existence since 1983 serving the needs of our community. We are an affiliate of Pro-Literacy America, and we provide direct one-on-one tutoring service within our community (Peoria, Marshall and Woodford Counties) by recruiting, training and matching volunteer tutors with adults in need of basic reading skills. Since our inception over 35 years ago, we have helped hundreds of adults improve their reading skills and learn to read and speak English. We have trained over 300 tutors over the years, many of which remain with our program today. We train approximately 50 volunteer tutors annually and match them with adult learners almost immediately. We offer ten tutor training workshops per year, normally at local libraries. Tutoring is normally set up by the tutor and the individual learner to meet their individual schedules and is held at a public place such as a library, church or even a school. Tutors normally meet one hour per week with their adult learner teaching the skills necessary to become a fluent reader. If you have questions regarding the workshops and becoming a volunteer tutor, if you are interested in finding out more about our program, or know someone who could use our tutoring services, please contact our office at 309-672-6087 or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
